1️⃣9️⃣ Use scheduled lightboxes or popups to display important information on your website at exactly the right moment.
Lightboxes are a powerful tool for grabbing your website visitors' attention - whether you're promoting a special offer, announcing an event, or encouraging newsletter sign-ups. A lightbox in Wix is simply a popup that floats above your page on a dimmed overlay, and Wix now lets you schedule one to appear at the perfect moment, no coding required. In this guide I'll show you what a lightbox (popup) is, why scheduling matters, and exactly how to add, customise and schedule one in the Wix Editor.

What is a lightbox (popup) in Wix?
A lightbox in Wix is a popup window that opens on top of your site, dimming the rest of the page behind a semi-transparent overlay so the visitor's eye goes straight to your message. In website design, a lightbox is one of the most effective ways to surface a single, focused call to action.
On a Wix site you build the lightbox element from the same elements as any other page - text, images, buttons, and containers and boxes - then choose when and where it appears. Because the popup overlay greys out everything else, a well-designed popup feels like a natural part of your website rather than an interruption.
Why schedule a lightbox or popup?
Scheduling your popup can significantly improve your website's user experience and results. Rather than running a popup all year round, you show the right message only when it's relevant. Here's why it's worth doing:
Targeted campaigns: display time-sensitive offers - holiday promotions, flash sales, or upcoming events - right when they matter most.
Better user experience: avoid overwhelming visitors by showing a relevant popup only during the period it applies, on the pages where it makes sense.
Maximised engagement: align your lightbox with peak traffic times for maximum visibility, and schedule a different popup for each campaign.
How to add a lightbox in the Wix Editor
Here's how I add and schedule a lightbox (popup) on a client site - it's quick once you know where everything lives in the editor. If you've moved to the new Wix Studio editor, the lightbox tools work in much the same way.
Step 1: Add a lightbox or popup
In the Wix Editor, click Add elements on the left, scroll down to Interactive, and you'll see four popup types to choose from. Pick the one that fits - I usually start with Promotion - and Wix drops a ready-made lightbox onto your site. Each option comes with a template you can restyle completely, so you're never starting from a blank page.
Step 2: Customise the popup design
Click into the lightbox to edit everything inside it - text, images, colours and buttons. First, set the popup background: change the overlay colour (black works well) and drop the opacity slightly so visitors can still see some of the site behind the popup overlay. Then style the contents to match your brand, add a clear call-to-action button, and make sure the close button and its icon are easy to find.
Don't forget your mobile site: open the mobile editor and adjust the layout so the popup looks right on a phone, where space is tight. A few minutes of customizing here is the difference between a popup that feels polished and one that feels bolted on - and the customization options in Wix give you full control of the design.

Step 3: Set triggers and schedule your popup
With the lightbox selected, click Set Triggers (or Settings) in the toolbar. Here you control how the popup behaves - show it on the first visit, after a short delay, or as a visitor is about to leave the site.
Give the popup a clear name, then open the popup settings and scroll down to Lightbox scheduling. Set the end date first (Wix won't let you set a start date beyond it), then choose the start date - for example, the first week of December for a Christmas promotion. Save your changes, and the popup on pages across your site will only appear during that window. You can even schedule different lightboxes for different holidays like Easter or Black Friday.

Step 4: Publish and test your site
Click Publish in the top-right corner of the editor, then visit your live site during the scheduled time to check the popup appears as intended. Test it on both desktop and your mobile site so the close button, layout and timing all work everywhere.
Customising your lightbox: design tips
A few quick tips make a lightbox feel professional. Keep the copy short and the design clean, use one clear button, and make the close button obvious so visitors never feel trapped. Match the popup background and overlay to your brand colours, and keep the layout simple on the mobile site, where a busy popup is most likely to frustrate.
For the finer customization options, Wix's own guide on adding and setting up a lightbox walks through every setting, and the trigger settings are worth reading before you go live. If you'd rather hand it to a Wix website designer, that's exactly what we do.
A couple of final touches really lift a popup. Link your main button to the right page - you can link it to a product, a contact form, or your mailing list sign-up - and check the close button icon is visible and sits clear of your content on every screen. Spend a minute editing the mobile site version too: hide any elements that crowd the small layout and keep customizing until the popup reads cleanly on a phone. Wix's own help articles cover every option if you want to go deeper, and we're always happy to help you get your Wix website design right.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add a lightbox in Wix?
In the Wix Editor, click Add elements, choose Interactive, then select a lightbox (popup) type such as Promotion. Style the popup, set your triggers, schedule it, and publish your site.
What is lightbox mode in Wix?
Lightbox mode is when a popup opens over your page on a dimmed overlay, focusing attention on a single message or call to action while the rest of the site stays in the background.
What is the purpose of a lightbox?
A lightbox grabs attention for one important message - a promotion, an event, or a mailing list sign-up - without sending visitors to a different page. It's the most direct way to put a single call to action in front of your website visitors.
Why use a lightbox?
Used well, a relevant popup lifts engagement and conversions by showing the right message at the right time. Scheduling keeps it from annoying visitors, which protects the user experience and your brand.
Final thoughts
With Wix's scheduling feature, adding a timed lightbox to your website is easier than ever. As a Wix Partner, I use scheduled popups to run holiday campaigns and capture mailing list sign-ups without hurting the day-to-day experience.
Whether you're running a limited-time promotion or simply want to improve the user experience, a well-timed popup is one of the simplest wins in web design. If you'd like help with your website design - lightboxes, popups, or a full build - take a look at a custom Wix website or get in touch.
