Meet Rory

With over 20 years in the IT sector, Rory has experience working with some of the biggest multinational companies. After studying computer programming in Ireland, he took up a role as a software localisation engineer at Microsoft, working across Windows CE, Windows Update and Visio.

Rory then moved into graphic design, leading design teams for franchise bids with National Express Trains, creating PowerPoint presentations at Goldman Sachs, and producing pitchbooks at Deutsche Bank and UBS, among others.

He later went on to study Sound Art and Design at the London College of Communication. Starting out djing in techno, electro and the influential sounds of Detroit and Chicago, his tastes evolved as he discovered composers like Philip Glass and John Cage, pulling him deeper into experimental and avant-garde music. That curiosity led to one of his most memorable projects: a sonic rolling ball sculpture - imagine a marble run reimagined as a machine that generates music.

These days as a break from web design, piano lessons and Ableton are the order of the day with still ambitions to release music in the vein of Peter Murphy/Gabriel.

Anything that involves layering complexity into something coherent (puzzles/collage) – a mindset that maps naturally onto web design and SEO. His time studying sound art also drew him into sound recording and filmmaking, and while he's always been passionate about cinema, he decided he'd rather be the one crafting the story than waiting on set for an action call. While working in the art dept of a music video the research took an unexpected journey into elevator scenes in movies. That side project became a dedicated blog – built on Wix Studio, naturally - where he posts weekly on the surprisingly rich world of elevator scenes in film.

It might seem like an eclectic mix, but Rory sees it as one continuous line. Programming, design, music, film, puzzles, SEO – each chapter has informed the next. He reads widely across film, design and business, and brings that same curiosity and cross-disciplinary thinking to every website he builds.

Rory draws upon this breadth of experience in his Wix website design work, always keeping pace with new technologies – from Velo to Editor X and now Wix Studio. Having previously worked across Macromedia Flash, hand-coded HTML, WordPress, Squarespace and Weebly, he found Wix to be the most intuitive and customisable platform for creating truly unique, high-performing websites. He now works exclusively on Wix and has helped over 100 clients build and grow their businesses there.
